A Vision for Redesign

In the mid-century historic neighborhood of Hollin Hills in Alexandria, a couple realized it was time to redesign their cherished home. Nestled among tree-lined streets, their house, built between 1949 and 1971, offered both privacy and stunning views of nature. Eager to bring their vision to life, they enlisted the help of Luis, a talented designer known for seamlessly blending modern aesthetics with practical architecture.

From the moment Luis entered during his first visit, he was captivated by the home's original layout—a central core containing essential features like bathrooms and storage. Recognizing the core's potential to create a fluid connection between spaces, he saw this element as pivotal to the redesign.

Transforming the Heart of the Home

Upon entering, guests were greeted by a small foyer leading to two distinct paths: to the right were the lively public areas, and to the left, the private bedrooms. The living space included a library, living room, and dining area, all illuminated by natural light streaming through an impressive wall of floor-to-ceiling glass that overlooked the lush backyard. A classic brick fireplace served as a welcoming centerpiece, perfect for gathering with family and friends.

Luis envisioned the central core as a multifunctional hub designed to enhance the living experience. He integrated bookshelves, kitchen counters, and appliances into this space, ensuring an open and airy atmosphere. A spacious kitchen island was crafted with an adjoining dining table, facilitating effortless entertaining. At the back of the kitchen, a foldable wall opened up to an outdoor dining area, creating an ideal setup for summer barbecues or cozy winter gatherings.

A Harmonious Retreat

As they continued their exploration, the couple discovered their primary bedroom—a tranquil corner retreat framed by expansive glass walls that showcased picturesque garden views. This thoughtful design allowed them to connect with nature while ensuring complete privacy. The two additional bedrooms were ingeniously adapted for versatility, primarily serving as home offices. Each room featured innovative cabinetry that provided ample workspace during the day, with Murphy beds that easily folded down for overnight guests.

Luis’s design philosophy focused on simplicity and functionality, beautifully showcasing the home’s mid-century roots. The renovation resulted in a warm, inviting space that harmonized modern living with the timeless charm of practical architecture. It became a dynamic environment for work, entertaining, and enjoying the comforts of home—setting the stage for new memories and cherished connections in their beautifully reimagined space.
