Nestled in the eclectic Del-Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia, a small brick colonial stood as a testament to its community's charm. Surrounded by quaint streets and walkable paths, the home radiated warmth and togetherness. However, for one couple living there, the cozy space felt increasingly constricted. With twin teenagers bursting with energy and creativity, they longed for room to embrace their passions.

The couple shared a deep love for art and showcased a unique collection of mid-century furniture throughout their home. Yet, their single shared bathroom often highlighted their need for privacy, especially during the hectic morning rush. They envisioned a more inviting space, ideal for hosting gatherings, complete with a larger kitchen that encouraged laughter and conversation. Vital to their dream were a spacious primary bedroom, ample closet space, and an ensuite bathroom.

Designing the Dream

Determined to turn their vision into reality, they sought the expertise of Luis, an architect known for his modern design sensibilities. Attentively listening to their desires, Luis understood that the addition needed to reflect the couple’s appreciation for art while preserving the architectural integrity of their colonial home. His simple yet striking solution was a two-story tower that would serve as both a functional extension and a work of art.

On the first level, the tower would expand the existing kitchen, incorporating a larger island perfect for family gatherings and entertaining. Additional cabinets and pantry space would reduce clutter, creating an airy atmosphere where creativity could thrive. This new hub would invite togetherness, filled with the aroma of home-cooked meals and animated conversations. The second level, designed as a private retreat, included a spacious primary suite featuring a modern bedroom, luxurious bath, and thoughtfully designed closets.

A Beautiful Transformation

Luis's vision broke away from traditional building forms, resulting in a structure devoid of recognizable elements like pitched roofs and window trims. The concrete panel surface above the kitchen windows maintained an opaque quality, casting intricate shadows while providing a backdrop for projected images during outdoor movie nights on warm summer evenings.

Clad in fiber-reinforced cement panels, the tower presented a contemporary aesthetic that complemented the existing home. A ventilated rain-screen system improved insulation while discreetly concealing downspouts. As the renovation progressed, the couple watched their home transform into a harmonious blend of functionality and artistry, reflecting their family’s journey.
