A Vision for Change

In the heart of Kent, Washington, DC, a family of four sought to transform their cherished brick colonial home. For 20 years, this house held countless memories, but as their teenage children grew, so did their dreams. They envisioned a modern, spacious haven that could accommodate their evolving lifestyle, but the triangular, sloped lot posed challenges. Undeterred, they aimed for an open design with five bedrooms, six and a half bathrooms, a gym, an office, and a rooftop deck bathed in natural light.

The Architect's Approach

To realize their ambitious vision, the family enlisted Luis Boza, an architect renowned for his innovative solutions. They explored options like a rear addition or a full remodel. After researching zoning regulations, Luis proposed an unconventional approach: instead of demolishing their home, they would retain the basement and foundation, creating two distinct volumes. This allowed the house to rise above the landscape while maximizing living space and views, connected by a stair tower that served as a light well and design feature.

The family’s excitement grew as their envisioned future home began to take shape. The new design promised breathtaking views of the Potomac River, enhanced by the sloping terrain. Visitors would encounter a floating volume of bedrooms and an inviting stair tower connecting all levels. The layout featured a formal dining room and a spacious living area that opened onto an outdoor deck—ideal for summer gatherings. The luxurious primary suite was placed to capture serene river views, while a rooftop deck provided a perfect spot for stargazing. The revamped basement was designed as a recreational space and a bright office that flowed seamlessly into the landscaped backyard.
